A decorative plaque displays the signals the whaleship Northern Light used to pass information to her whaleboats. The first nine signals and the last were made by flying flogs at the mastheads. “Heave up” meant to hold the boats where they were; “for mateing” meant to join another whaleboat in pursuit of a whale. The other five signals were made by clewing—i.e., partially shortening—sails.

A wounded and vengeful sperm whale flips a whaleboat skyward with its great flukes after staving in the hull of the ill-fated whaler Essex, in this 19th Century re-creation of the tragedy that occurred in the Pacific on November 20, 1820. One survivor, First Mate Owen Chase, recalled haw the maddened bull gave the whaler “such an appalling and tremendous jar, as nearly threw us on our faces.”
